Seneca Azure opened up her green eyes as she looked around her bedroom. It was light blue and light green and had an aquatic look to it. She looked out the window at the mid summer sunrise. She was excited as the the first semester of 4th grade neared its end. Summer break would start soon and then onto the rest of the school year.
On Lenmana Island, schools start in April because it was the beginning of spring, according to Lenmana islands belief system; spring is the season of new beginnings so it was decided that was when children should start school. School ended in March of the following year(the end of Winter to be exact) but students had several breaks throughout the year. The biggest break was summer break between the first and second semesters of the school year. According to her classmate Ayleen's mom, Lenmana's school system was very similar to SimJapan's school system. Seneca liked it because it made sense to her to start in the season of new beginnings and end in the season of darkness.
The 9 year old removed herself from her bed as she slid on her duck slippers then went over to her dresser to figure out what she would wear today. Her homeroom teacher Mrs. Shelley was taking the class on a hiking trip as a celebration of a good semester. They would be spending time exploring the trails of the Adahy Woods nearby so she was advised to wear long pants, boots and bug spray. As soon as she found an outfit she could hear her younger first grader brothers in the upstairs hallway. running around and yelling. She walked out of her bedroom, only to be toppled over by the twins colliding with her. Seneca made a noise as she felt her bum hit the floor, with Tawi and Okwi's smaller bodies pretty much pinning her to the ground.
"Sorry big sister" The twins apologized together as they removed themselves from her.
Okwiraseh put his hand out to Seneca as he tried to help her back up. The boys were still running around in their pajamas. Seneca patted her brothers heads as she returned to her feet. The two of them didn't like that too much, well more Tawiskaron than Okwiraseh.
"TAWISKARON! OKWIRASEH!" She heard her mother's voice from downstairs. The three siblings stood at the top of the stairs as they saw their mother waiting below with her hands on her hips. "Can you finish changing into your school clothes." their mother said in a mix of questioning and ordering.
"Why isn't Senny in her school clothes?" Tawiskaron asked crossing his arms across his chest.
"Seneca has a hiking trip today with her class, so she has to wear play clothes." Jacy Nova answered her son with a bit of a glare.
"No fair! We had to wear our uniforms for our school trip, last week." Tawiskaron complained.
"Tawi we just went to the museum" Okwiraseh tapped his twin brother's shoulder.
Tawiskaron paused a moment as he looked at Okwiraseh. "Oh...right" he mumbled defeated.
Seneca let her brothers pass her as they went into their own room to change into their Summer school uniforms, which was a short sleeve shirt and pants with the school's logo on the shirt's pocket. Seneca made her way downstairs where grandma Pocahontas was making breakfast.
"Yummy what are you making grandma?" Seneca asked as she peaked at the stove.
"Omlettes, with some fresh vegetables from the garden" Pocahontas smiled at her granddaughter as she handed her a plate. "You have a long day ahead of you, Adahy is the biggest forest on Lenmana"
Seneca smiled and brought her plate over to the kitchen table as she started to eat as the thoughts popped in her head. "I hope we don't get lost though"
Pocahontas chuckled at her granddaughter as she pat the 4th grader's head. "The rangers marked the trails, I'm sure you and your classmates will be fine." This caused the 9 year old to smile and nod her head as she finished eating her breakfast. "Thank you for breakfast grandma"
Seneca then heard Tawiskaron and Okwiraseh running down the stairs and into the kitchen. The looks on their faces were always amusing, the two of them loved food although had to remember to chew. Seneca went and brushed her teeth while her brothers ate (and bickered) at the kitchen table.
"HELLOOOO, WE ARE HERE!!!" Seneca heard a voice from outside that belonged to her cousin Aientsik.
She finished up in the bathroom and saw her father answering the door revealing Seneca's cousins Aientsik and Niagara. Seneca smiled as she put her tooth brush back in the medicine cabinet and tied back her hair in pigtails. She ran over to the door as her father handed her a knapsack full of snacks for the trip. Seneca and her cousins often rode bikes to school together while her brothers usually ended up with a ride. Seneca said good bye to her family members as she brought her bicycle from the garage and then rode to school with her cousins.
The ride to school wasn't long since the school was only a few blocks away. The cousins parked and locked their bicycles in the Elementary School's bike shelter before heading upstairs to their homerooms. Aientsik spent the time mumbling about how she had three end of semester tests today rather then getting a chance to dress in play clothes and spend the day outside.Seneca and Niagara couldn't help but laugh at their cousin's bit of jealousy.
"Aien, don't you get a weekend of camping with your class during summer break?" Niagara asked. "We are just going on a day hike"
"Yeahh but still.." Aientsik chuckled. "Don't get lost ok!" the alien teased her younger cousins.
The thought about getting lost caused Seneca to worry a bit. Niagara noticed this and wrapped her arms around Seneca. "Stop worrying, my mom says that the trails are marked, I'm sure Mrs. Shelley won't let us get lost"
The school bell rang and Seneca and Niagara made it into their homeroom as it was loud with the voices of several excited forth graders revealing their snacks and talking about the trip in general. It wasn't long before their homeroom teacher showed up to calm the classroom down.
The bus came to pick the forth graders up, it wasn't just Seneca's homeroom going on this day hike, it was all forth graders in the school. Each homeroom teacher, as well as their 3 homeroom parents were in charge of their own class. Mrs. Shelley was class 4-A's homeroom teacher (she actually has a daughter who is in Tawi and Okwi's first grade homeroom) and their three homeroom parents were: Mae's mom Mrs. Kita, Aaron's dad Mr. Seabrook and Jikonsasay's mother Adoette Hunicke. Seneca knew that Mrs. Hunicke was her mother's cousin, and that she actually liked being called by her first name by the students (well other than her own daughter Ji who just called her mom). Which was a bit odd to do but at the same time it made her a pretty cool homeroom mom.
The bus let all the students off in front of the Park Ranger's building, a log cabin sitting at the edge of Adahy Woods. The homeroom parents helped the students lather on sunscreen and get sprayed by bug spray outside while the three homeroom teachers went inside to check in. Seneca and Niagara were the last two who got taken care of by Adoette, Adoette did Ji first then moved on to Garakontie and Allegheny and soon enough Seneca and Niagara.
"WHOA! look at all these trails!" A voice from her classmate Ayleen spoke up excitedly. "They are all marked with pretty colors!"
Seneca and Niagara looked at each other than stood behind the other girl. There were several trails and each color had a description of the length of the trail as well as the difficulty levels (Between 1 and 10, 10 being the most difficult). Ayleen read each description to Seneca and Niagara as she pointed them out on the map.
"The red trail would be so AWESOME!" Ayleen announced in her, regularly, loud voice.
"Ayleen that's the most dangerous one, I'm pretty sure they won't let forth graders go on it" Niagara mentioned.
"Besides" a boy's voice came from behind the girls. "It says here that for trails red, orange and yellow; you have to be at least 18 to go on them" it belonged to Garakontie or Gar as everyone called him, he was Ji's cousin and Adoette's nephew.
Garakontie was the tallest kid in the class, he towered over the three shorter girls in front of him. Ayleen looked over at him with a bit of a glare but then shrugged.
"Well I hope we aren't stuck on the white trail, that has a difficulty level of 1. It doesn't sound like much fun." Ayleen pouted.
The teachers returned from the ranger's building and went back to their classes. They handed out maps for Adahy, they were pretty much the same as the map the students were looking at just previously in a smaller version. The colored trails were marked some of the trails overlapped each other and there was alot of other information about Adahy as well as a note about the red, orange and yellow trails being only strictly for 18 and up. There were also warnings about the weather as well as where there were safe shelters along the trails.
"We will be following the purple trail today." Mrs. Shelley announced to class 4a, which was soon echoed by the teachers for 4b and 4c. "It's a level 3 out of 10 and should take a few hours to complete. We will have a stop for lunch in shelter 4 which should mark the halfway point of the trail. You can all relax for about an hour there and then we will finish up the second half of the trail." She started explaining the plan for the day's hiking trip. "Class, please be careful and pay attention to your fellow students and your surroundings. Everyone should have a map just in case."
As their teacher continued to talk about what would be happening as well as other tips Seneca looked over at Niagara who seemed to be pretty deep in thought. She gave her cousin a light poke in the side.
"The trail is only about 2 hours without much of a delay. Adding the lunch bumps it up to 3 hours, and then there are the challenges about taking three classes of fourth graders through the woods which could add another hour or hour and a half. We would probably be back to school before the last bell rings" Niagara spoke out her thoughts as she used her fingers to count.
Seneca looked at Niagara with a curious stare, but somehow this didn't surprise Seneca in the least. Niagara was always analyzing things, but she was also pretty smart. She was one of the fourth graders with the highest grades although Poe Benson from class 4c was the one who was at the top.
It wasn't long before the fourth graders started their Hiking. The teachers had the kids on a buddy system as well, they really wanted to keep the students safe. Seneca and Niagara were always buddies when it came to class field trips.
Seneca held her cousin's hand as she looked around at the woods surrounding them. It was summertime so the trees were full of leaves, sticks cracked beneath her boots, the birds chirped loudly. The flowers bloomed, they had learned about alot of different plants in science class and how they grew and developed as well as the animals. Seneca looked around hoping she could see a deer or a rabbit or any animal really. She knew her family had a connection to wolves.
The science teacher Mr. Jones, was actually the homeroom teacher for class 4b and today the other grades would have a study hall instead of class. He was asking the students questions as well as explaining about the different trees and plants they came across. Seneca looked over at Niagara who was pretty enthralled in what the teacher was speaking about. Niagara loved to learn about plants and animals, and she had a thing for bugs as well.
"Seneca look!" Niagara spoke energetically as Seneca lightly brought her over to a tree Niagara pointed upwards at some buzzing insects that were always active in the summertime. "Cicadas" Seneca could see the excitement in her cousin's golden eyes.
"Very good Niagara" Mr. Jones said as he went over to the tree the two cousins were looking at. "Can anyone tell me what the family of the Cicada is?"
Niagara's hand shot up at an instant as the teacher called on her. "The Cicada is part of the family known as Cicadidae, while their super family is Cicadoidea. Did I pronounce those correctly?"
The rest of the first half of the trip was full of students observing the forest, taking pictures, and even being quizzed on certain aspects of the forest. It was around noon when they made it to shelter 4 which marked the middle of the purple trail. The shelter had a few picnic tables but was enough for all the students to eat their lunches. They had hung out and more pictures were taken. The hour was up quicker than they expected as the fourth graders packed their knapsacks up, used the outhouses available (although there were several complaints on how smelly they were) and were back on their way. The weather was at its peak as some of the lighter skinned students started noticing their skin was getting a little red. Seneca and Niagara had already replenished their sunscreen with the help of Ji's mother, back at the shelter.
The rest of the hike was even more fun than the first half there was a small stream going down part of it that the students ended up jumping in and splashing each other with the water to cool off a bit. Of course that also meant that there were alot of fourth graders with sopping wet clothes the rest of the way. Seneca was one of them. She had always loved the water and had been one of the first to start splashing Niagara with it. The cousins had a blast and soon enough their field trip was over.
They thanked the rangers for letting them explore the purple trail before heading back onto the bus, by then the clothes (well most of them) had been dried by the sun, but also got extremely dirty when the dirt from the trail stuck to them. Seneca looked out the window as Adahy passed by and they made their way back to Lena where the School was located. Niagara had passed out on her shoulder for the second half of the trip.
The students returned back to Lenmana Elementary where the teachers advised them to try to get cleaned up a bit in the bathrooms. They did their best to clean up any dirt left over from the trip with the Janitor's help. Mr. Green was too happy to have something to do. They made their way back to their classrooms excitedly as the students received worksheets. Homework over Summer Vacation was very common for Lenmana Island's students, the teachers liked to make sure that the students didn't go completely brain-dead over break. This just showed how important Education was to those who lived there.
Seneca met up with Niagara and Aientsik at the Bike Shelter. The three cousins rode back home on their bikes. Niagara's house was the first stop, the blond girl waved at her cousins before heading inside the house. Seneca's house was right next door to Niagara's and Aientsik lived around the corner. Seneca and Aientsik parted ways as Seneca entered her house.
"Well it looks like you had fun sweetheart" Pocahontas stopped to look at her granddaughter. "Please remove your boots at the door, we will have to clean them off outside later."
"It was alot of fun!" Seneca said as she put her hand on the wall to balance herself as she removed her dirty boots. "It was a nice day today and really warm, we had water bottles on us the whole time and Mrs.Shelley brought extras just in case. Well Ayleen needed one of those extras since she had drank the one she brought with her, in the first half of the hike. Niagara had a blast as well, she was answering all of Mr. Jones' questions, she even knew the family and subfamily of Cicada as well as the other insects. The look on Poe Benson's face when she kept getting called on was priceless! Lunch was fun but the outhouses weren't fun at all. They were very smelly. The second half of the trip we ended up playing in the stream near the purple trail for at least 30 minutes." Seneca continued to tell her grandmother about her field trip and the things that happened during it.
It wasn't long before her brothers were home, seeming very disappointed about something.
"The teacher doesn't want us to have any fun this summer does she?" Tawiskaron complained as he looked at the worksheets in his hand. "It's supposed to be a vacation."
"Welcome to Elementary School Boys, where summer homework exists" Seneca heard her father come in from the garage. Which was shortly followed by two first graders groaning. She couldn't help but laugh.
