Animals of Farthing Wood - Book 7

Apr 03, 2008 08:25

Having just reread the seventh and last book in the Animals of Farthing Wood series, I feel now is as good a time as any to write about it. It's difficult, though; it's just too depressing.

This book is about war. If you like stories about war, you'll probably like this one. If you ask me, it's not really reading material for children, at least not ( Read more... )

That book sounds amazing. I never really cared that much for Toad, but now that you've been talking about him so much, I think I'm starting to like him. It's probably because he's so great with Adder that it's impossible not to like him.

And wow, Sinuous's death is horrible! It's not the biting that's bothering me but the fact that she couldn't even squirm. Can you imagine what it must be like to have to be completely still while something like that is going on and you can't fight back? Ugh! Poor Sinuous...

Have you thought about writing an AU in which Toad and Sinuous don't die after all?

I didn't care much for Toad in the cartoon, either. I think he's a lot more likable in the book, but I'm not sure if I'm being biased because he happens to be so friendly with Adder in the book. ^^"

Yeah, that's what bothers me the most, too. When I read the passage "Even in her agony Sinuous was unable to squirm," I began to squirm myself in sympathy. I've had many nightmares like that. :P

I have, but I wasn't sure it was a good idea to disregard a part of canon just because I don't like it. Besides, the "Sinuous didn't die" idea is a little cliché in the fandom. Then again, I'd rather do that than write a fic in which Adder has no mate and no best friend. Even if I can't bring myself to write an AU, I'd at least write something set before the last book.

Toad was a bit annoying in the cartoon, but I can't really put my finger on it. It was like he was made somewhat goofy just for the laughs or something.

I don't think there's anything wrong with disregarding canon if you do it well and it serves a purpose. If it's just because you don't want to see Sinuous die, it might be useless. However, if you can tell a good story by doing that, it's going to rock. In any case, whatever you end up writing, I'll read, love, and review. ^ ^

I know, he annoyed me, too. Whenever I heard him going, "Heeey, maties!" I started to twitch. He is kind of goofy in the cartoon, and when I read the book, I was surprised to see how more serious and deeper he sounded. Even before he befriended Adder, I thought he was more likable than in the cartoon.

Thank you! ^^ Hopefully, I'll come up with a plot sometime soon. I'd love to write a book-verse fanfic! The book series needs more love in this fandom!
