[Review] The Animals of Farthing Wood (book)

After a loooong wait, I've finally got the book The Animals of Farthing Wood by Colin Dann, the first in the series. Too bad this series is so difficult to find, because I'd love to read the other books as well.

This book covers the first season of the cartoon. I had a hard time deciding which version I preferred, but I think I like the book better ( Read more... )

Wow, the books sound awesome! If you compared Adder to Raistlin, he must be a very interesting character in the books. I still have a hard time picturing any of the characters with their original genders, so the books might feel like a completely different canon.

That singing bit was hilarious! I get the funny feeling that there was some singing in the cartoon as well, but maybe that was Weasel? She had a terrible voice in the cartoon, right?

How many books are there in total? I checked Amazon.co.uk but most seem to be unavailable, as you said. What a pity indeed.

In my opinion, Adder is the most interesting character in the book, and I'm not saying this only because he's a snake. It's just that he thinks and acts so differently from the others that he gets more prominence. Tawny Owl is also different from the others, but Adder has a wittier personality that makes him more interesting. Besides, he's the anti-hero, and you know I have a weakness for anti-heroes. Haha, indeed. Anti-heroes are perhaps the best kind of characters, though I personally prefer remeemed!villains, as long as they're done well. :P

I didn't check Amazon.co.uk very carefully, so I probably just saw that there were no new copies of most of the books, so I figured they can't be bought and didn't even check the prices for used copies.

Hmm, I love redeemed villains, as well, but I don't think there are any in AoFW. The closest to that are Ranger and Spike, both of whom switched to the good guys' side. But they weren't really evil to begin with.

You should check again, then, both for used copies and new ones. I just saw the entire series available, and most of them were new! Or so they claimed. Maybe they just got in? The last time I checked the site, in December, there were only used copies, and none sold by Amazon itself. Things change fast in the 'net.
