In less than two weeks time I'm supposed to give a presentation on the sociological aspects of women in the military (a fellow student is going to do a part on the historical background, so that's all covered and I don't need to read any more books on it) and I just finished the essay that is required reading material for that class.

That's an interesting application of tokenism. I actually think we have two different definitions here :D The thing you describe (and I have heard frequently, too... every time I do, actually, I want to punch someone) seems to me one of the phenomologic shapes of the effects of the visibility that token persons have (Frau Merkel as one of the very few female political leaders).

I.e. I think that Moss Kanters' description of tokenism is more of an analysis tool describing effects in regard to minorities than social action discriminating against minorities.

If that makes any sense O_o

It's one of the best fields to apply the theory. I'm pretty sure that there's no military except the IDF (ie. the Israeli Defense Force) where women from a percentage of over 15%. Usually, it's a lot less than 15% (far as I know, the only branch in Germany that has more than 15% is the medical service with about 25%... after 37 years. Overall, there are about 10% women of all German active duty soldiers) and the military is its own little social biotope, so there are a lot of extreme phenomena to observe.
