so do you like it? i've heard mixed reviews, especially from the "low purists".

well... being mildly obsessed with low, i would have to say, it's different.

i really am enamored by it. i think it will take some listening to, to really like it like i do the rest of low's music. but i really fell for it with the first note. i think that if there is a low album that will appeal to the masses, this might be it. but "canada" was a good single to appeal to the masses and that didn't really do much so i might just be making it all up in my head.

it has more pop sensibilities. i think it may be drawing more from the music that they enjoy as a band...

i think i may have fallen in love with mimi and alan, so this may skew my "review" of anything they do... but i think it is a brilliant album that has taken them to a level that they haven't reached before. i will be at the record store to buy it on the 25th, unless i pre-order it first.
(insound has it on pre-order and you get a 15% discount if you use the code low15 )

i went back to listen to my Low cds a few weeks ago - I was bored silly - maybe i am getting even more older and crankier - then again i am the only one who is not jumping up and down over the arcade fire - it is an OK cd but nowhere near great......

i think it is older and crankier, because i have no idea how you could possibly find them boring.

but i do agree on the arcade fire being nowhere near great... i think it's good, but did you see that pitchfork put it at number 1?!?! it isn't THAT good for sure.

pitchfork is just a big joke - i try to ignore them.

then again - when magnet says a band is a band to watch - it is indeed a band to watch.

i had trouble coming up with a list of 5 great releases from this year - mostly i spent money on old soul and jazz...maybe the fall, tv on the radio, irradio, fiery furnances, talking heads reissue were at the top.....

so, maybe this is a little late to reply, but i have to put in a good word for the arcade fire. they put on one of the best live shows i have ever seen. i really like their cd as well, although i over listened to it and am taking a break from it....maybe that means it's not as great as i thought. but none the less, it was by far my favorite release from last year.

i tried to listen again - still left me kind of bored - then again as I have told allison many o' times i could be just old and cranky....

but i do think the quality of "indie" or "punk" music in the past few years has just been sub par. I finally picked up the Effigies compilation of their early recordings "Remains Nonviewable" - covering their 81-83 output this releases packs more muscle/melody than just about anything that has come out in the past few years....
