I was thinking about something, about a month ago:
I know they are (most likely) not connected but I still find this interesting.
While Atlus USA lists him as "Theo," the Velvet Room assistant of Minako (female!MC) is named Theodore.
What's short for Theodore (besides "Theo")?

EVERYTHING SUDDENLY MAKES SO MUCH SENSE
Or at least Teddie is the Shadow that was created out of loss for Minako and ended up gaining its own existence.

I really like the theory too. One thing that hasn't been brought up (at least not in these comments) though is the age differential between Theodore and Teddie.
I don't know what your theory is, but I'm curious to hear it :)
For the time being though, (because I didn't really have a theory when I posted. And I still don't lol) I'm going with sentienttoaster's second idea: "Teddie is the Shadow that was created out of loss for Minako and ended up gaining its own existence."
This would explain why Teddie is so much younger...-looking than Theodore (We need an age, even an approximate for Theodore). Because we don't know how (or even if) Shadows age, Teddie very well could have aged so much during that year between 3 and 4.
I know someone will bring up Death (in P3), in regards to aging Shadows. However, I think Death was a special case because of what happened prior. (No spoilers :P)

But... it doesn't really fit. :( They didn't call Elizabeth "Lizzy" so why should they call Theodore "Theo"? I liked how the assistants all have very old, traditional and long names... Theo just ruins that pattern.

Must be a regional thing.
