I have spent the last few days doing everything EXCEPT writing, so in lieu of me being a slacker, enjoy some concept images.

I suppose this is part of his construction proccess?

But god the face.

Blackness, peeling off. I know it's natural for birch trees, but it...

Apathetic expression and hurt--his reset mode.

And birch bark as, well, paper, write what you will upon it...

I haven't decided if he ever actually looks like this in the story, but the idea got stuck in my head one day and I had to get it on paper.

If I can get it right then I'm going to make a full body cover, because the contrast between the birch bark and his face being a symbol for the verse as a whole is too good to pass up.

Well, he passes as an Aesir, so he can't look like that all the time.

But maybe while he was cutting himself to see if he bled? During repairs? Ridding himself of stains and blemishes?

Limbs regrowing, gnarled and knotted, rooted to his torso and neck, then smoothing out once complete. Cuts are strange and pappery, almost like somone sliced into a book, or rather a tree. Scars simply peeled off, a layer at a time, or else a layer taken from elsewhere and placed over it as a seemless patch.
