Judging by this meme, I fail at cooking.

Bold the ones you have and use at least once a year, italicize the ones you have and don't use, underline the ones you have had but got rid of, and strike through the ones you never had:

I wonder how many pasta machines, breadmakers*, juicers, blenders**, deep fat fryers, egg boilers, melon ballers, ( Read more... )

Yes, THIS. Besides knives, saucepans, frying pans, and your basic spoons and spatulas, do you want to know which of those things a restaurant kitchen would most likely have?

Deep-fat fryers -- the big waist-high fryolators, not some little household things. Ask me about cleaning them. Better yet, don't.

Pastry brushes.

Meat thermometers/instant-read thermometers.

Piping bags.

Conical strainers.

If they have a steam cooker, it's an industrial piece and it's because they do high volume. A small restaurant wouldn't have one.

Double boilers/bains maries -- probably a large plug-in bain marie to be the soup warmer, and to use a double boiler for things like melting chocolate or making hollandaise, you just stick a mixing bowl on top of a saucepan.

Notice how few of the specialized items are there.

I would posit that owning a large number of gadgets on this list does NOT make you a foodie or even a likely good cook, but rather a rather gullible person who thinks that owning these specialized gadgets are the key to cooking success. A rice cooker? A saucepan works just fine. Garlic crushers? Use the flat side of your knife, or better yet, use the sharp side and finely chop the damn thing. Egg poachers? Last time I checked, you poach an egg by dropping it into a swirl of simmering water. That saucepan I cook rice in would do just dandy.
