Actually, the Big Read only asked people to name their favorite books. It said nothing about how many of them the average Brit had read. http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/bigread/
I also found the shift from Lyra to Will in HDM disappointing. Not that I would have minded him as a strong supporting character, but Lyra was a big part of what made the first book so interesting, and his presence seemed to make her go OOC and fade into the background.
How odd about the Big Read not being the original source after all (looking at their top 100 list, it isn't quite the same as this one). I wonder who altered it, and why? Was it so we'd all get that gold-star feeling for having read more than 6? Not entirely successful, if so, because a whole bunch of them I read for school and did not particularly enjoy.
