You would think that the coming hurricane would be enough to worry about, wouldn't you ( Read more... )

I wouldn't fancy the approach of those storms either and I LIKE storms. HOping it passes you by. Take care.

There are storms...and then there is something that could knock down some of the skyscrapers of New York. The infrastructure is NOT designed for hurricanes.

(And the asshole zealots will use the damage caused by nature and lack of hurricane preparedness as evidence that their politics have to be pushed through if God isn't going to destroy the world.)

I hope this pointless storm spins itself harmlessly out to sea.

Do you have any friends inland you could visit? Seriously, if you could get here we could put you up, but that's probably too far.

I would say.. try not to catastrophize. A lot of trees do not come down, and hurricanes can lose momentum. Irene already calmed once, and could again.

You might try calling the Red Cross, explain your situation, and ask if they have any emergency services for people like you who are dependent on technology, and the RC sometimes has access to shelters where the electricity is backed up with generators. I have a couple of close friends who have to sleep with cpap machines, and that was the idea one of them has as a crisis strategy.

I am inland. The center of the state, actually. But the current storm path says that the entire state is going to be affected.

According to the Red Cross website, the closest Red Cross Emergency shelter...is Longwood High School, Middle Island, NY. I don't see myself getting to Long Island post-hurricane.

I'll call them and ask about emergency services, though.

I agree with lee_rowan. The worry and stress of something that might happen (hopefully won't) can make you as ill as the possible event. Take care, and follow that good advice. *hugs*

Thanks. I'll try to relax. I just wish I could do something remotely useful.

Is there anything those of us not in your area could do? Like, if you haven't posted within 12 hours of the hurricane reaching the area, assume you might have lost power and call... whatever the relevant local emergency services might be to check on you? I assume lots of people will be doing the same for their friends and relatives if they can't reach them.

I very much hope the storm starts fizzling long before it hits.

That would be a good idea, actually. I can't guarantee that I'll be able to post or will even have power after (or during) the hurricane. (And assuming LJ doesn't get hit with another DDoS attack in the meantime.)

From what I've read it should hit Connecticut sometime Sunday. How long do you think would be reasonable to assume you would have posted on LJ or DW if you could? I'm lifelong West Coast and have no experience with hurricanes, so I have no idea. And who should we call? (You can PM whatever info you think necessary if you don't want to post it.)

I'm local and I'm going to be staying in touch. If the power's out, I'll charge my phone in my car & give gehayi a call, and if I get no answer and we're not under orders to stay off the roads, I'll go check up.

If I'm hosed for internet at home but the library is open and has it, I'll post from there to let people know how things are.

I'm hoping we all come through it OK.
