Books

I'm going to the library on Saturday...and it just occurred to me that I don't know quite what to get. So I thought I'd ask my friends' list. Do you have any suggestions about what I might get--or at least put on reserve?

I don't know how fond you are of Historical Fiction, but anything by Bernard Cornwell is excellent, my personal favourites being the Sharpe (Napoleonic War) and Starbuck (US Civil War) series :) There are also a lot of them - over 20 of teh Sharpe series though only 4 of the Starbuck Chronicals :(

hmm. If you haven't read the Enchanted Forest Chronicles (Dealing With Dragons, Searching for Dragons, Calling on Dragons and Talking to Dragons, by Patricia Wrede), you'd probably like them. It's a more young-adult series, but it's very definitely held up over time - sort of a Fractured Fairy Tales deal, if you remember Rocky and Bullwinkle. Also smart heroines (more than one, even!).
I will note that the library at home's copies of anything past the first book disappeared after I read them the first time, so there's a chance they've been kidnapped if they were in the system to begin with. But it's an excellent series, and I highly recommend picking it up by any means possible.

Huzzah!
Not enough people have read them, I swear.

My mother read these to me, and I've carried on the tradition with most of the kids I've babysat. It's a good thing when they persuade their parents to buy them the book so that they can find out what happens next! *grin*

I'm not very well-rounded when it comes to books. However, I totally think you should find something that was once on the Banned Book List.

That's a good idea. I think I'll go through the various lists of banned books and try to find one that looks promising.

Have you read Stepehn King's Gunslinger?

I'd rec the non updated version (the original) unless you think you might read the whole series.

But I think the original version read very well on it's own, and is an interesting character piece, more or less.
Much more mature writing too, than I'm used to from King.
