"Silver" DvD Commentary

This one is short, anyway. The story itself didn't reach 1500 words.

For those who want to see the other DvD commentaries--if, in fact, anyone does--here are the links: Stopped, Part 1 and Stopped, Part 2; and Escaping Wonderland, Part 1 and Escaping Wonderland, Part 2.

Also, I could imagine when he has bad dreams, that he dreams of how Harry looks so much like ... prey.

I think he has nightmares that are so intense that after he wakes up, he's unsure if he's killed Harry or not.

I pity him. He suffers so much and so unfairly.

You didn't say so, but it hangs in the air that silver has this unholy attraction for him, that (at first) it sort of feels good...

You're absolutely right. I missed that "unholy attraction" bit, but it's definitely there.

I've always loved this story, and your commentary is fascinating. Your description of Remus's reaction to silver is so realistic I shouldn't have been surprised it comes from actual metal allergy. And you're right, the trap Remus is in here is awful. While I don't believe that this is the mythology JKR is going with, it's frighteningly plausible. And while I haven't read the published version I can easily imagine it would work well outside the Potterverse.

I was tired of angsty characters suffering worse than anyone else in the world. I wanted readers to know that it was possible for a character to suffer enormously and still be better off than some.

I really appreciate you saying this - it's pretty annoying that for many writers, if it's not the worst ever (or the best ever! *g*) it just doesn't seem to count. Which practically dismisses everything half-way realistic, doesn't it?

The published version involves a gay werewolf trying to survive after his lover had been murdered--senselessly and pointlessly--in a robbery gone wrong. Actually, the OC werewolf has it rougher than Remus. Remus has friends who know what he is and who accept him. The OC werewolf is forced to conceal his nature from a disbelieving world, and has consequently lost the only person alive who knew and accepted him for what he was.

...practically dismisses everything half-way realistic, doesn't it?

It does! And that's wrong. Suffering in fiction shouldn't have to be like going for the gold in the Olympics.

I have always loved this story. Simply because everything in it is so real. It makes perfect sense.

It's also refressing to see that Remus isn't saying "OMG! SILVER HURTS LIKE A MO' FO! I GOT IT SO BAD, YO!"
