Interesting tack with Grindelwald. I've read a few fanfics that concentrate on him, but almost all of them turn him into a misunderstood!Dark Lord, or a Voldemort-clone.
I hadn't heard that Rowling had decreed portraits to be simple imitations of life. I think it's too late for that, really, with the way her writing is going. Unless the portraits in Hogwarts are different than the ones elsewhere, of course.
I never saw the portraits as without personalities - maybe just the moving pictures, but not the portraits.
Anyway, this was fascinating. I like the look back into the Black family history and Grindelwald. I wonder if it was a coincidence that he was a Dark Lord around the same time England was embroiled in World War II?
