Yes. Yes.

This guy gets it.
"Well, you could quit, because it’s too hard to make stuff you aren’t already great at. You could convert all that pointless effort and practice back into MySpace updates and the production of funny cat pictures. TRUTH. I've run into that so many times in my own creative endeavors in music, and my friend (the other Dan) always berates me when I'm tempted to fall into that trap. This is the reason he's made a point of recording everything he does in one take, and posts it regardless of any screwups of flaws. I'm always tempted to delete what I've recorded and try to get it "just a little better", and I've actually ended up posting nothing in the end because I was unsatisfied. But because I'm not willing to go through the awkward learning phase, because I've not given myself (as Dan puts it) the "freedom to suck", I've ended up doing NOTHING, while means I'll NEVER get to that place I want to be with my music.

I have to share this article around with everyone I know, because I really does speak true to a lot of the things I feel, and it really holds true across all of the creative fields.

The freedom and courage to suck, and also the power to be proud of the talent you are developing. Why not be proud of it? I've always been annoyed when adults tell me they can't draw. Ask any 5-year old, and they all believe they can draw. You just have to DO IT.

I'm glad you're inspired by this too! I actually first learned about it via a tweet from Felicia Day of The Guild and Dr. Horrible fame. She enjoyed it for its application to writing. It's really true for anything.

I really like this article! Fear of failure has always held me back. If you got it perfect the 1st time, you wouldn't need to do anymore!

I'm all about Courageous Sucking. We have a warped sense of instant gratification in our society - it's like nobody's allowed to do things they're not instantly good at.
