Yeay me, first post! A few years ago I found out about customizing my little ponies and fell in love and it's been my most loved/expensive hobby. I also knit afgahns, but making my little ponies have attitudes will always be my fav.

Enjoy the poniness! )

These are all so cool! I love the yellow fairy and the green one with the wee glasses. So cute!

I've always wanted to try this, so exactly how expensive can it get?

It depends on the materials you use. I like mine to be as high a quality as I can so I order real my little pony hair with runs about $3.25 a skein. If its for something really important I'll buy a brand new my little pony and customize it which is about $5 to $10 depending on what it is. You can get huge lots of "custom bait" ponies on ebay which is usually the best way to go. I use a special industrial solvent to clean and remove all markings and that runs about $15 to $20 a bottle. Then you have to decide if you want to paint the body or use dye. To keep cost down I try to recycle items I already have. Like the bride pony, I had a lot of seed pearls on a garment I didn't wear any more so I took them off and used some of the fabric as the veil. I also have a special tool I bought to rehair them, which was about $8. I highly suggest you get one of those if you want to try this because it cuts down on time and aggrivation! On the flower fairy ponies its heavy duty wire and mesh. They started life as garden decorations that I took apart and painted. On the blue pony its stuff called fantasy film. It's kinda like shrink wrap and the more heat you use on it the more color you get. It's moderatly expensive so I got a trial pack of colors and was experimenting with it.

These are awesome! What kind of paints/dyes does one use to repaint these?

the paint is just general acrylic from walmart and I like to use Rit dye because it seems to last the longest and have the brightest impact.

Oh wow, cool! I thought you would need a special kind of paint for plastic. I have ponies and I have acrylic paint and Rit dye. sweet!

Now I just need motivation.
