Oh for heaven's sake. It all depends how you define point-blank range. I asked at least one guy to surrender, and he didn't. If they let head-shots count, we'd ahve had a much better class of game, and the feckwits in the other group would have had medical casualties from testosterone poisoning.

I started to read a winters tale, but didn't finish it (I found it in someone else's house). I've thought about it since then. The last part I remember is the girl dying of consumption (who sleeps on the flat part of the house roof) - assuming we're talking about the same book. Lovely imagery as far as I remember.

I've only just seen this, and put two and two together. We are indeed talking about the same book. I loved it; although since I wrote that list I've made an attempt to re-read it and found it slightly hard-going. I think you need to be in the right mood to appreciate it.
