Hilariously bad writing

So I'm listening to Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn, supposedly one of the trilogy of best novels in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. And I'm sure some of you remember when I mentioned: "His frowned deepened into a deeper frown". Well apparently Zahn just LOVES that word because I've encountered this line:

I bet his characters need some Botox with all the frowning they do

SERIOUSLY people frown in every other scene! Not that I wouldn't frown if I was presented with some the EPIC SPACE OPERA going on this thing, but honestly. No one smiles, in Star Wars people are only allowed to smirk. :]

Do you think I should try reading some of the books that the fandom has universally panned as awful? I wonder what their standards are.
