Collaboration

So my friend Darrel has been saying for quite some time, "Come over some time and you can check out some of those issues of Juxtapoz that I have. Maybe we can do some drawing." I finally took him up on the offer today, and it was kind of cool and kind of scary ( Read more... )

collaboration, colored pencil, drawing, doing something for the first time, ink pen, art

Yeah, I felt my brain growing, sort of like it was going to pop out of my head a few times. It was a little intense! Darrel had me take one home to work on it myself, and after putting this stuff up I started goofing with it and ended up staying up until 5:30 in the morning working on it!!!!!! It was kind of ridiculous, but really cool.

The weekend is way too short. I may have to call in sick so I can do more stuff.

That is awesome! Collabs are so much fun. I remember the first time I got together with some of my artist friends and how nervous I was to draw in front of them (so they could see how much I sucked- lol) But it was really a blast, and they didn't care how many times I had to erase stuff- lol.

I like what you guys came up with! I really like the left side the best because of how the color was used- it balances very nice with the right side. I'm glad you had fun doing it :)

Sweet! Thanks, man. I thought of your post about your sister and the Munnys and her saying "That's why you should do stuff with other artists." It was rather nerve-wracking. The first few things I drew were really crappy, but I just kept my mouth shut and kept drawing.

And, yeah, that color on the right side - most of it is mine! Woohoo! Darrel I think has this one and he's going to keep working on it. He said he might use some metallic ink markers or maybe some paint if he decides to get really into it.

Thanks for the encouragement. Oh, and from looking through those magazines Darrel loaned me I found tons more stuff on those vinyl toys. That's pretty awesome stuff. I didn't know there's this whole culture of art toys out there. Looks like it could get extremely addicting!

Working with other artists really is a good time, i just don't get to do it too often. Frankly my sister is the only other artist that lives within an hour of me- haha. You should do it more often :)

this is actually a pretty neat site for custom vinyl- it is a total blast, and there is a huge community for it!

Delicious Drips = way, way, WAAAAY too much fun! You're evil! I don't need to start any new projects or spend more money now, but that...must....resist!

Very cool. I like the design and I really like how it comes to life with color.

I'm no artist (artistically minded, maybe, but definitely lack a steady hand), but the way you described it reminds me a little of a game a friend and I played in high school. We were in history together and whenever we had a partner project of some kind, we'd breeze through it and use the rest of the class time to play this drawing game where one person would start by drawing something random, the the other person would build on it, and go back and forth. My friend actually could draw, but iit was just for fun and we came up with some pretty awesomely twisted stuff.

Anyway, glad you ended up having a good time despite your nerves. Like your other friend said, it's good for the brain and a a little inspiration goes a long way.

That game you're talking about is pretty much exactly what we did. Some of Darrel's stuff is really, really weird, and I'm a little more straight ahead, so it will be interesting to see how this turns out.

I used to play a similar game with a friend in high school, only it involved words, and the idea was to insult your friend the best way you knew how. You'd star with a piece of paper, and in the middle write some insult about the other guy, then you'd give it to him and he'd have to sort of tree off it and build onto it to make it into a different insult. It ended up looking like a really bizarre made-up crossword puzzle. We laughed our asses off doing that. I forgot all about that. Good times.

Oh, and on the music side of things, for some reason today I found myself listening to the Go Gos. No, I don't know how that happened!

Yeah, you know exactly what I'm talking about then. That insult game sounds like a perfect comparison and sounds like something he and I would've done if we'd thought of it. Haha good times indeed.

The Go Gos were actually a good, respectable band! That reminds me: I bring CD's to listen to at work and, a couple months ago, I took a couple days to salute the ladies of the 80's. I broke out Roxette, Heart, The Bangles, Pat Benatar, Gloria Estefan, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul, and probably a couple I'm forgetting (yes, I own at least one CD from all of them). I was just in a nostalgic mood and decided to make it a theme, and it totally hit the spot. Speaking of all that, this song still rocks in my opinion. Classic song & video from a classic movie (Less Than Zero)

The insult game, we just called it "the word game." The weird thing is, I reconnected with that guy recently, and he doesn't remember it! I want to find an old one and mail it to him so he remembers and we can start insulting each other long distance. That, man, is true friendship!

The Go Go's were a respectable band. I did some research and found out that they still play out, never really stopped. They do a few shows a year, apparently, and have on occasion recorded a new song or two. I, of course, couldn't help thinking of the Bangles as they were another all-girl group from the 80s, so your link was totally appropriate. I haven't seen Less Than Zero in yearrrrrrrs.
