It kinda adds up

I have been really busy with the welding stuff lately, so getting pictures loaded up and all that has kind of ground to a halt. Hopefully I'll get some of that squared away this week, hopefully ( Read more... )

My jaw dropped a little further with each chunk of change you listed that you dropped on this project in the first couple of paragraphs. I know how that sort of thing goes, but mine's usually not on as large a scale, luckily. But it does sound like it will get better and will be worth it in the long run. And a rolling ball sculpture that runs through the entire house and/or a big one outside for kids to play with? I'm really looking forward to seeing this stuff. Oh, and congrats on reaching the "pretty sweet" level!

Wolfman was good? Glad to hear it! I'm going to see it in a couple of days. I was against the idea of a remake when I first heard about it, but then I read that Del Toro was starring and that changed everything. It just seems like he'd be perfect in that role.

Del Toro did very well. Yes, it was a good remake, and I'm a guy who is generally opposed to remakes. I did NOT expect it to be a scene-by-scene exact recreation of the original, however, and it is not that, so be forewarned. As far as being an entertaining rework of the original, however, it scores. It's not cheesy, and the liberties it takes aren't so far out that you start rolling your eyes and going, "What? Are you friggin' SERIOUS?! That's not how it goes!!!!"

Yeah, the welding is getting expensive, and I don't have a lot of free cash to throw around. I need to eBay some more stuff so that it doesn't get ahead of me. It should be well worth the investment, though.

I'm working on photos, girl! I actually didn't get to weld a single thing last night because I was trying to get some hard drive space cleared out for more pictures. Should be sometime this week, not that they'll be exciting photos. They're only exciting to me, because I know what I'm looking at. Likely to everyone else they will just look like burnt lines of metal. Oh noes!

Oh, I take that as an offense :-P
Who says I won't see the art in the early metal-work? I have the eye of an artist. *enter crossed-eyes here*

There's a blacksmith workshop near where I live, like, you can watch him work through if you stand in one of the windows.

aaanyway, I was being attentive this week, he is welding a big metal door together, I saw the welder, the sparks flying in every frigging place IT WAS SUPER AWESOME! Like mini fireworks.
So yeah, I can only imagine someone experiencing that from a space less than a meter :-D
he had a protective mask not glasses.. Guess to protect his whole face.

Yeah, most people will wear a mask, because of flying sparks and molten metal and all that good stuff. Sometimes gas welders will just wear glasses, and the flame isn't as bright, so you don't have to worry about burning your eyes with gas welding.

The other stuff - arc welding - that you shouldn't watch with your bare eyes! It'll blind you. You can watch the light off to the side, but you shouldn't look right into the arc. It's brighter than the sun. Truth. If he was just using a flame torch, and I'm guessing he was, you're cool. I mean, it'll tire your eyes, but it won't burn little blank spots into your field of vision.

Brighter than the sun.. COOL!
I googled Arc Welding and yeah, it says there should be inert gas in the process.. Which adds to the coolness :-D

yeah, he has two devices. One with a cog-like rotator and one with a long rod (probably the flame-gun)

my dad is fascinated with iron, metal and stuff, he went to a huge factory a while back and watched while they melted huge amounts of iron.
He said the sound is super loud despite wearing ear.. Erm muffs? Anyway, he had access coz he works in the company associated to the factory so yeah.
I can get u all the metal u want :-P

Nice glasses, Haley!

Yep, inert gas = argon, at least for most applications. It's cheap and harmless to the atmosphere and people. I have a bottle of it at home now.

The thing with the rotator - that may be the spool for the wire, which means he's using a MIG gun. The one with a rod could be stick welding or the gas welder, don't know.

Ear muffs - maybe there's a better word, but now ear muffs is stuck in my head!
