I very much doubt there'll be another series now, tbh. And, from the fact that Capps has previously said that he knows how they're going to kill off Arthur in their version, I'm not expecting a particularly happy ending either.

When did they say such thing? I don't recall them talking about killing off Arthur :/

It was during SDCC of last year If I'm not mistaken... in double video interview.

It was in one of the magazine interviews I read earlier this year with Capps. Alas I cannot remember which one.

I distinctly recall reading it though because I'd always assumed they'd end series 5 with the start of the golden age of Arthur's reign. Now I doubt that's the case tbh.

TBH I was still hoping there will be next season :( and I was also hoping this show will end on high note without the horrible Arthur being dead and Merlin stuck in stone.

It IS Arthurian legend so the ending is always depressing with the hope Arthur might come back some day.

But, yes, I thought with the nature of the show they'd rather end on the start of Arthur's reign proper. Now what with their continuing soundbites about it being more grown up and darker and them saying they know how Arthur dies, I do suspect the end will be Camlann and his death.

...with the hope Arthur might come back some day.
If they truly kill Arthur off this series, then I HOPE they make an allusion to the "coming back" thing and Merlin's immortality.

Yeah although I hope Merlin has some company or immortality waiting around for Arthur will kind of suck!

I found this link on Twitter to an article which suggests Series 5 may not be the last =

http://www.cultbox.co.uk/news/headlines/4736-merlin-producer-reveals-details-of-uthers-return

Johnny Capps said =

“We talked to Tony and said, ‘We want to bring you back in some form’,” Capps recalled, “and WE WERE GOING TO BRING HIM BACK TOWARDS THE END OF LAST SEASON, BUT the way the story arcs went IT FELT MORE APPROPRIATE TO BRING HIM BACK IN SEASON 5.”

Since Johnny Capps is one of the main people in the Merlin team, this seems more reliable information than Andy Adam right?

Johnny said they originally thought of bringing him back in the last series.

If Series 5 was the last series he wouldn't have said that. Since they wouldn't have to change that idea. :/ :S

Just jumping in here, but I think by "last" Johnny meant the previous season (as in S4), not "last season" as in the final season. :)

Why would they kill Arthur off at the end of Season 5 and deny themselves the possibility of a Merlin movie? More likely, surely, that they will deal with the Mordred arc in as untraditional a way as they dealt with Lancelot/Guinevere? I'm personally hoping for Mordred vanquished/dead, Merlin's magic revealed in the process and Arthur at the height of his powers. I'd even stomach the biggest cliffhanger in Camelot (ie it ending on the magic reveal) if it meant they'd do a movie with this cast (and not, as had been hinted as by Capps, with a reboot cast). And I imagine Uther either comes back in dreams/memories or that he's conjured back in the same way Arthur's mother was. Anyway, for all its ups and downs I love the show, I can't wait for Season 5 to begin and I know I'm going to be so, so sad when it's over.

THIS!! Those are my thoughts exactly. Whatever they do I don't think it will be anything that we expect, which is something I enjoy about the show. I can't wait for Season 5 either :)

yes, thank you for saying this! for all the faults merlin has, i really love the show too. and i never once stopped loving it, or thought it was bad tbh. and i don't want it to end either. :( i want it to go another season at least. i feel like there's so much more story to tell. but if this is for sure the last season, i know i'm going to enjoy every minute of it and i'm going to be really really really REALLY sad when it's over. since merlin's been gaining more and more fans recently (like me) and it'd be a shame to see it end for us personally, so soon.

but anyway, thank you for this refreshing comment instead of the usual doom and gloom opinions i keep reading recently. :)

Tbh if they know the actors aren't interested in doing any more - and frankly if there is no s6 that is likely the case since the BBC would likely want more - then killing Arthur off makes sense to them. They'll want to finish the story IMO since they said they know how they'll do it.
