Cautionary Note

Every now and then, someone stumbles across my blog and asks me how they, too, can work in development. I try to be supportive, but usually find myself actively discouraging them, at least at first.

You’d better be strong, flexible, resourceful, good with languages and have more than the normal allotment of patience.

No one *ever* asks me about getting into development. Of course, you are living in the South Pacific -- can you just hear the strains of Bali Hai? -- and I am in a noisy, dirty, smelly, corrupt city of 16 million, more likely to provoke wistful renderings of "Don't It Make You Wanna Go Home"?

Maybe if you published a few colourful pictures of the maimed and the dead, the centipedes and the snakes, it would provide a useful corrective?

Alternately, tell them they have to start in Dhaka before they can earn the right to be disabused of their illusions about Bali Hai....
