I'm not 100% sure what the actual problem is, sorry. It's completely normal to have people you prefer over others, and to spend time with them. As long as he isn't directly pointing out why others aren't sufficient enough, for example, I don't see the issue. He could like everyone, but enjoy some people more. It happens. Is he doing something purposeful to single people out?
Well, this is our instructor at taekwon-do so he should be impartial. I think people at my class were mostly upset because he seemed to have chosen the person he was most impressed with to sit with, and hardly spoke to some people. There was a lot of grumbling from a few people the night after. I think they don't like the thought that they feel snubbed.
