Hold the Fort!

Apr 12, 2010 21:46

Characters: Open
Place: IN SPACE!
Time: Not long after DIVA sounds the alarm and Commander Farix puts out the call for fighters.
Summary: Hostile forces have been spotted on the horizon and are closing in fast. Alliance ships have responded by dispatching defensive units. Be it the ships' built in weapon systems, mechs, or fighter ships, the Alliance forces are determined to neutralize all threats.
Warnings: TBA, if needed.

At first response, the Alliance ships was overrun with a sense of great urgency. Alarms flashed and sirens sounded. Heavy footsteps pounded down the corridors as non-commissioned and field-commissioned personnel alike hurried to their respective stations. The hangar was alive with the sound of engines roaring to life and launch sequences initiating, with the hiss of airlocks opening to deposit the various fighter ships and combat machines into space.

But soon all the preparation work that could be done was finished. The combatants remaining on the motherships were armed and in wait. The able engineers were in the engine rooms. The medical bays were standing by. The civilians who opted not to volunteer were secured. The strategists were at their comm stations, prepared to give their expertise as they could. The ships were all dispatched and at ready.

The alarms were silenced save for the advisory warnings on all the ship's displays to remind the crew what alert level they were at, the sirens and flashing lights having served their purpose. Everything both inside and outside of the ships was still. There was nothing to do but wait for the enemy ships to pull into range, a calm before the storm.

The stillness held for a minute, then two, the seconds crawling by as the rebel ships grew clearer and clearer against the dark backdrop of space.

The stillness held, but then without warning was shattered by a single shot that splintered through the air.

With exchange of fire that followed, there would be no telling which side had fired first. But then, that hardly mattered.

The fight had begun.

[ooc: This is an open log for all of those who want in on this fight, whether they're manning the defenses and guns (i.e. lasers, blasters, etc), or piloting ships and combat machines. In a nutshell, the enemy ships will be carrying heavy artillery, enough to damage ship systems with one hit, but not enough to put a ships immediately out of commission. Additionally, they're not so fast or agile that your character will miss every time if they aim or take a swing for them, so even characters inexperienced in artillery and piloting will be able to take them out with persistence.

The ships will eventually go into full retreat, but that's no reason to start celebrating just yet. These rebel types aren't generally smart enough to know when to throw in the towel, so if they've got their backs turned then they probably also have something up their sleeves.

Additionally, your character may want to coordinate with the other units around them to be able to out-maneuver and out-gun the enemy. We highly encourage people in mechs/fighter ships to communicate with those manning the defenses on both ships. Cooperation and collaborative strategy is powerful thing, after all!

In short, this is a free-for-all event, so it's up to player discretion how the battle plays out up until the full retreat. Have fun!

Edit: We could like the clarify the following:
Q. Can we only use prose to tag this log?
A. By all means, use whichever format you're most comfortable with! Action tags and prose are both permitted here.

Q. What kind of weapons are used by the ships/artillery?
A. Laser and beam weapons, not unlike highly advanced cannon.

Q. How best can we interact in this log?
A. Directly (either piloting together or on a ship) or indirectly, via a universal comm system that will allow you to directly contact another person by focusing on them. This means you can help someone out in space or on the ship from wherever you are.

Q. What about enemies/battle?
A. We trust your discretion in fighting foes, so just use what we've given you here. Have fun with thread-hopping, setting up challenges from NPC enemies, and don't be self-conscious about writing fight scenes.

Q. What do you mean by "The civilians who opted not to volunteer were secured"?
A. You're by no means confined or detained, but you are being guarded for your safety.

Q. What should I do with my character? I'm not sure.
A. Contact a mod and we'll be happy to help you decide what to do. That's what we're here for, after all.

Q. What if I still have a question?
A. Do feel free to contact any member of the modly team and let us know how we can help.]
