At long last, I am toying around with calcite again. Extremely troublesome to work with, I have found that simple DF plugs are best suited to the material. Green and blue calcites are still trouble, but pictured here is actually what is considered orange calcite. These plugs were cut from a very light (no orange on these) section and are more ivory in appearance. Orange calcite has a grain to it much like trying to sand the long grain of oak which does not fully disappear no matter how polished. So please note that these have a bit of a polished grainy surface shown in pics below only seen when the light reflects off the surface like glass. This is a natural texture.
Calcite is the one of the most common mineral in the world and is the same mineral that makes up stalagmites in caves.
Hours of hand sanding went into these with no problems encountered.
