Your cruise ship passengers sound a lot like the ones I had way back when I took the QE2 across the Atlantic. Much older than me (I really was young then) and very experienced with ship travel.

I went on a tour of the Zaandam when it was here in Seattle a couple of years ago and after showing us the ship, they served us lunch, and it was excellent food. On the Alaskan cruise Christy and I went on, I had a lot of trouble not snacking since the buffet was just one flight below and a few short steps from our cabin.

I'm enjoying your trip reports very very much.

Is it a suit and tie, or just a jacket and tie for the men? Because I'm having so much trouble envisioning JL in an actual suit! If it is a suit, please please tell me you're taking pics -- I don't know that I've ever seen him in anything but a t-shirt!

This is actually making me want to do this, and I've never really been attracted to the idea before. But I'm so glad you're having a good time!

I've been enjoying your travel journal! The name Zaandam was familiar, and I finally looked up the ship's name that we were on for our (one and only, so far,) Prairie Home Companion cruise to Alaska in 2006 - same ship! Turns out to be a small cruising world, it seems! :-)
