The Katrina aftermath. Pictures.

Well, my dad made it back from Biloxi last night. He was so upset, which I can understand. But part of me wanted to say, "Hey look, this wasn't your HOME. It was just a vacation place. Think about the people who suffered this and it WAS their home." But, he was pissed, and I wasn't about to wage that confrontation. Besides that, I was ( Read more... )

Oh my god, that's so sad, and sickening, to think wind and water did all that :(

Yes, it's very sad to realize water did that. It's amazing the force it has.

I live on the east coast, in Virginia, and have been shaking my head for years over the fact that they keep developing along the beaches. Even down in North Carolina, on the Outer Banks, they've gone in and levelled sand dunes so they can build rental houses (can't call them cottages any longer, they're waaay too big and expensive to be cottages). When Isabel hit, the places that had the most damage were those houses that were built where dunes used to be -- if you went north, to Duck and Corolla, where the houses are separated from the ocean by the dunes, there wasn't as much damage. Nature does provide some protection, but not full protection, and when mankind goes in and tears down what nature's provided, then it just makes the odds worse ( ... )

They are hoping that when everything gets rebuilt, that they will allow the casinos to operate on land. That would help SOME. Not a lot, but every little bit helps.

Our state relies on that revenue so badly that it's worth the risk to build there in this case. But I definately agree that it shouldn't be done on a large scale. Particularly in the case of homes.

It will take time, but I think you are right. He will get through it, we all will. Thank you! *hugs*

Yes, thank goodness those people are okay. And that the death toll doesn't seem to be anything like they first feared it would be.

*massive hugs*
