TLC WAS epic. And I loved how the dynamics worked as people got changed up and switched around. I honestly wished we'd gotten more of Elizabeth and Daniel interacting, they were fun.
On Steen--I liked her, but honestly I can't understand the people who had a beef with Torri, because Steen was onscreen a total of about 10 minutes filming time. Torri did over 60 episodes of SGA. How do you argue Steen was a better Weir? You didn't really get to know her that well.
If you didn't like the way Torri played Weir, that's one thing, but to say Steen was much better is sorta stupid IMO. It's just not comparable. That's like arguing that Kurt Russell and James Spader were way better Jack O'Neills and Daniel Jacksons.
I'd have like to have seen more of Weir/Jackson, it was an interesting pairing (not in a shippy way). It was, at that stage, one of the few times Jackson had to advocate for MORE military action.
It's a pity that that wasn't the final ep for Hammond. As much as I loved him and Don, they didn't really use him that well when he did come back.
The Kurt Russell/James Spader thing is quite apt here. For one thing, all the characters are generally different to a degree in a movie, as was the case here. I can't really picture either of the two actors (Steen & Higginson) in the other's role.
I do think the character of Weir, as it was written in the movie, was a better fit for SG-1 as a commander. But it seemed to me they altered the character slightly to fit into SGA. Or perhaps that's just actor portrayal. I don't really know, it's pretty academic now anyway.
and RE: the Steen/Torri debate (I have a lot to say sorta on this one...) Steen didn't come back because she ended up on another show (I can't remember which one off hand) and turned down SGA. Torri....honestly (and we all know how much I love her NOW), I loved her in S8 of SG1 but didn't love her so much when I watched Rising the first time. At the beginning of SGA, imo, she seemed cold and distant and I wasn't a fan. 'course my opinion changed, but I think I can see why some people may have had a beef with her.
I'm a bit the opposite actually. I didn't like the way the character was slotted in during New Order (the poker stuff seemed a bit of a stretch, and she was actually written as a poorer study than in TLC).
Rising re-sold me on Weir, especially the balcony scene. Yeah, I can see why some people have a beef with actor portrayal. I'm not sold on Michael Shanks, most other people love him, yet I found in s7-10 he seemed to overact to the extreme *shrugs*
