Sadly.. one of the elementary schools up here is touting that Florida schools are ranked #5 in the nation.
WTF?
I had to take basic algebra, when I got to Kansas, because Wyoming math was so behind. I had to take trig TWICE.. They were in shock that I didn't know what the difference was between sine and cosine (or however they're spelled)
That report rates the 'quality of education', not how our kids are actually performing. It's sad really when a report is used to misrepresent the state of our education.
It's an old report, but it explains how this report is misused.
we have the MCAS here. i had to take them every few years, the last being my sophomore year. i had this ridiculous math problem to solve and then write an essay about it. i got so frustrated with the problem I ended up writing an essay about how stupid the test was and wasn't an accurate test for finding out a students knowledge or ability. Nor was it helpful when the teachers would spend teaching us to pass the test instead of learn the actual subject.
That's the same complaint here and then they want to base a teacher's salary on how students perform. Well, there's far too many variables for that to be accurate. They can't treat the teaching profession the same as a sales position. *shakes head*
Chris failed the math portion of the ASVAB because he NEVER learned math reasoning. All his time spent in class was to learn how to take the FCAT. I deserve a refund on his education because he didn't receive the education my taxes paid for. It had nothing to do with teachers (he got good grades), it was because of a certain political party's love for the FCAT.
