p.s.s. my interpretation of this chapter is that ryan isn't necessarily being attracted to either women or men, but merely discovering the possibility of sexual attraction. he's starting to learn that he can find people interesting due to their appearance and it startles him to look at his friends this new way. and from ryan's point of view, 'new' or 'confusing' automatically equals 'bad' because he feels safer putting the 'bad' tag on something before working out whether he can trust the new emotions and matters or not.
