I will be really interested to see what you think of the Ronald Howard series!

And yes, something the dialogue is REALLY BAD (the Pennsylvania Gun springs to mind), but sometimes it's great, and anyway Howard and Crawford carry it off. I'm very glad you mentioned this series to me! It wasn't really on my radar at all before.
Off to watch another episode this evening, in fact.

Nekosmuse reviewed the series from a slashy perspective and while I don't always agree with her, the episode summaries are kind of fun. Here: http://www.nekosmuse.com/withlovesh/?p=240 except that ARGH he's not "Ron" Howard, it's "Ronald".
In fact, if you're not familiar with her, she reviews the Russians, Granada, the movies, and many other versions of Holmes as well.

The episodes are long -- over an hour, and often two-parters. More like made-for-TV movies, in fact. So there aren't many in total. Eight, I think. There isn't really one among them that's weaker than the rest, but as for the best place to start… Probably the very first one, 'Acquaintance', which is actually an adaptation of the Speckled Band.

...not only Sherlock Holmes does speak Russian, but also: R.L.Stevenson's Prince Florizel, Marry Popins (she sings as well), Dickens' Edwin Drood, Robin Hood, Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, Winnie-the-Pooh, Mowgli, Inspector Calls, Ivanhoe, Dr. Jekyll, Invisible Man, Hamlet, John Silver, Ten Little Indians, and many, many other characters from British literature - adaptated into Russian films.
And a good number of them are adaptated closely to the primary sourse.
Perhaps, you might be interested with someone from these films?
