Lenfilm adaptation with Vasily Livanov and Vitaly Solomin (aka "Russian Holmes")

[I'm cheating this time, because I was supposed to be discovering new adaptations, and this is one I've known for ages -- as well as it being my absolute favourite :) ]

Thanks!

Yeah, weekly posting is already a LOT for me… :D

Though you were already much better at the posting-every-day meme than I was, even if you didn't actually make it to 30 days! :)

Just FYI, I gave up the 31 Days meme for a reason that I think is "non-standard" and FRTDNEATJ (personal reason that I don't want to put in an open post, but will tell YOU if you ask me in a PM).

I loved the Russians also, although I only discovered the series a few months ago.

I will be really interested to see what you think of the Ronald Howard series!

First impressions: I'm really enjoying it. I started off with the episode you mentioned, the Royal Murder, but I've watched several others since.

And yes, something the dialogue is REALLY BAD (the Pennsylvania Gun springs to mind), but sometimes it's great, and anyway Howard and Crawford carry it off. I'm very glad you mentioned this series to me! It wasn't really on my radar at all before.

Off to watch another episode this evening, in fact.

Heh. If you think the Pennsylvania Gun was bad, wait until you see the Texas Cowgirl. However, The Cunningham Heritage is a reprise of STUD with MUSG grafted onto it and that's another really good one.
Nekosmuse reviewed the series from a slashy perspective and while I don't always agree with her, the episode summaries are kind of fun. Here: http://www.nekosmuse.com/withlovesh/?p=240 except that ARGH he's not "Ron" Howard, it's "Ronald".

In fact, if you're not familiar with her, she reviews the Russians, Granada, the movies, and many other versions of Holmes as well.

I have heard of this adaptation before but am leery of having to rely on subtitles. Is there a particular episode you would recommend to start?

I'm pretty sure the episodes were never dubbed, only subtitled, and it's certainly very strange to hear Holmes speak Russian at first. I quickly got used to it, but in my head I believe it's more like an AU where Baker Street has someone magically been transported to Russia!

The episodes are long -- over an hour, and often two-parters. More like made-for-TV movies, in fact. So there aren't many in total. Eight, I think. There isn't really one among them that's weaker than the rest, but as for the best place to start… Probably the very first one, 'Acquaintance', which is actually an adaptation of the Speckled Band.

// it's certainly very strange to hear Holmes speak Russian at first. //

...not only Sherlock Holmes does speak Russian, but also: R.L.Stevenson's Prince Florizel, Marry Popins (she sings as well), Dickens' Edwin Drood, Robin Hood, Miss Marple, Hercule Poirot, Winnie-the-Pooh, Mowgli, Inspector Calls, Ivanhoe, Dr. Jekyll, Invisible Man, Hamlet, John Silver, Ten Little Indians, and many, many other characters from British literature - adaptated into Russian films.
And a good number of them are adaptated closely to the primary sourse.

Perhaps, you might be interested with someone from these films?

Hey, thank you! I only took up drawing again recently after a break of… gosh, over a decade. But apparently it's like riding a bicycle :D At the moment I'm practicing and having a lot of fun drawing different actors who portrayed Holmes -- there have been a lot of them!
