What is an appropriate gift to get for someone to mark an occasion, something like an anniversary, or some kind of important date? I usually would err on the side of something simple, like flowers, but this seems more important than that.

Well... I've never really had an anniversary before, but... Maybe picking out something that reminds you of this person? To let them know you were thinking about them?
