Are some people still celebrating that holiday today? I thought the point of Halloween was to unnerve and frighten each other. If that's the case, wasn't most of the month a rather lengthy extension due to the Thor being docked at the last planet?

Or... am I missing the point...?

I always thought it was about getting candy. And Pumpkins.

What are the pumpkins for?

Maybe the funny faces scare away ghosts.

[ So overly serious forever. ]

I don't think that would work.... Not even the costumes are likely to scare ghosts.

I'm not quite sure what the point was. When I looked it up it seemed a bit close to Oban, but I'm, not quite sure. It's been a lot of fun though!

Oban? Is that a holiday about monsters and ghosts as well?

Yes, Obon is a time when the spirits of the deceased come back and are remembered. It's not really about monsters and things like this is though. But reading up on this holiday I see they are similar in many ways.

Then I suppose at their core, they really are similar.

Do... the spirits of the deceased truly come back in your world? Or is it just part of a legend?

Ah, that's part of it, yeah.

And the other parts?

Originally, Halloween marked the changing of the seasons from fall to winter and people would harvest and prepare for the months ahead. It was also a festival to honor the dead. The first part no one really cares about, at least not where I'm from, and not many people know that either.

Halloween's a pretty big deal back home, but now it's not really about the harvest or honoring the dead. It's about scaring the crap out of each other, dressing up in costumes and stuffing your face with candy until you throw up.

[ Soul! So knowledgeable! But now Larsa's confused as to why the holiday moved from something peaceful and honorable to... that. ]

It sounds like a rather sadistic holiday when told from your point of view.

I think that was just a coincedence, Larsa. I don't think this ship chooses where it goes. I think we're just wandering aimlessly through space.

I meant an extension of the holiday itself. I'd imagined no one would have any energy left to still celebrate a scary holiday even though we've left. Yet people seem excited for it still, and many shops are filled with costumes and such.

[He can't help but chuckle a little.]

That's the thing about this place Larsa. It's nuts.

But I don't think it's the scary part people are excited for. I think it's the dressing up and getting free candy. Even I think wearing a costume is fun.

[Though he's less than impressed with the black Organization coat he's wearing.]

I've been here since May and... I find it a little sad that I'm still not used to how strange everything is here.

[ Yeah, Hope. What's with that costume? It looks like it was made for a girl! Particularly Xion. ]

I suppose it could be fun, but... how would you get free candy?

Well, part of it is dressing up and going trick-or-treating, too. Not all of it is scary.

But aren't the costumes meant to be frightening?

Not always. I think there are some people who do that, but most people just dress up.
