[The soft notes of this song come through with the image of Irene playing a lovely new grand piano. The music flows smoothly for a few minutes until a certain point, then she pauses to work over a difficult phrase

Once I knock? No secret password? You surprise me.
[But it doesn't, not really, not after months and months of seemingly innocuous behavior.
And the video turns off, Holmes disappearing for the few minutes it takes for him to get to Irene's place-- he appears with his violin, looking surprisingly cleaner than usual.
It's so rare that he makes social visits, after all.]
[She chuckles to herself - always a pleasure to surprise him, although she is uncertain if this is the best way in which to do so.
At his entrance she looks up from her piano playing, and she is slightly surprised in turn when he appears not only looking relatively proper, but with violin in hand.]
Good afternoon. You are looking rather well for 'rotted remains'.
[She gestures with one hand for him to come and take a seat near the piano, then continues to play out the phrase she was working on.]
I decided I'd put in the effort to prepare the corpse.
[He steps in and seats himself with an air of nonchalance, though it's apparent by the expression on his face that he's, once again, listening to the music.
A few bars, and Holmes picks up his violin, starting to play something to accompany it-- he doesn't know the tune, but he's heard enough combinations of notes to improvise something that should go well with the song.]

[She raises her eyebrow at the sudden accompaniment, and with a pleased smile continues to play through.
Far from them now seem the days where he would scurry to check all his possessions when she entered the room. ...Although he might still be right to. She still has an item of his, after all.]

[He's not exactly past his suspicions, nor is he ever going to stop being wary around Miss Adler-- that's part of her mystique, after all-- but he's decidedly not perpetually guarded around her, which is...
...strange, considering that his interests in her, his fascination with her cunning is the very thing that kept him attached to her in the first place.
But it's a good thing that he's not apathetic, and he continues to play until the challenge of following the tune passes and he feels that it's a good place to stop.]
[Give her the right setting, and she would proudly display her cunning once again. But she suspected that she was sharing an off-shoot of Holmes' very problem: this environment was not quite right for crimes of a severe, dramatic nature.
And so the two of them were reduced to a musical score being their next challenge.
But the day would come. She would have her treasures, and Holmes would have his cases. Until then...
When she finishes she glances over her shoulder to look at him.]
I rather wonder if mere written music is sufficient for you.
[Turning around on the bench she rises to come to the low coffee table where books of music are stacked and starts shuffling through them. Finding two she hands them out for him to take: Duet for violins LeClair Sonata No. 4* and Schumann piano and violin sonata in A minor no. 1.*]
An amusing distraction, really. The theatre is my greatest preoccupation.
[That and taking care of the house. It was something she would rather not have to do, but after the sudden disappearance of Belgium it had fallen upon her once again.]
But still, it's quite a song, and he listens to it in silence for a few moments before he chooses to reply.]
Is it challenging?
[The violin piece, he means.]

[The familiar names are somewhat welcome relics of his time, and he takes the sheet music with all the care he gives to important artifacts in a case.
At least he has these little things to appreciate, for now.]
You've been keeping yourself busy with these, have you?

[And his mind weaves a web, words resonating through the strings of his mind, picking up on data that he's retained and kept.]
Which reminds me-- I never did get to see Don Giovanni.
