I am unsure his reasons for it other than his job, however he may have had passable ones. That, or he underestimated the flower youkai.

In any case, to answer your question, he may have just been acting foolish. It would not be the first act he has performed. If he wished to protect you, the best way is usually to teach you to protect yourself.
