Oh I adore this!!! I love the idea of one small ferret defending the Ringbearers. She was truly brave and deserving of the name Bell!

And I'm quite certain it IS true, but just never made it to the Red Book!

One of the most charming branches of folklore concerns the Holy Family's adventures during their flight to Egypt -- all sorts of tales sprang up about how they were aided along the way or rescued (always at the last minute) by unlikely heroes. (My single favorite is the tale of how they were saved by a fly and a spider.)

I can imagine how hobbits (and Men, and Dwarves) would embroider and embellish the Quest until there were several decades' worth of adventures survived by the Ringbearers during their month-long solo journey to Mordor.

And of course a ferret would come to the aid of Frodo -- after all, hobbits too are small, hairy, cute, live in a hole and love to eat!
