worms, to add or not to add

i have a raised bed garden that was filled about 5 years ago. its got wonderfully loose black soil. but its a rather tall raised bed. its maybe 28 inches tall. just tall enough for me to rest my bum on the edge and sit while i plant or weed. it is full all the way to the bottom with soil, composted manure, peat, sand, and shredded decomposed ( Read more... )

I would LOVE to have my raised beds be three cinder blocks high. Mine are two, and are a bit short, but I do perch on the edge. I can't recall if I have ever seen worms in any of mine, although I do have worms in my very poor dirt. I think if I were in your situation I would toss a shovel full of worms in there and see what happens. I wonder if it is the way raised beds drain that keeps worms from it? They do drain "well".

Worms are good. Either buy a cup or two of nightcrawlers from a bait shop or transplant some from the surrounding earth. Whatever is easier. (You can also buy bags of worms off amazon.)

I'd transplant a couple of shovels full of worms; can't hurt. They'll help keep the soil nice and lose and add poop to it.
