These were planted by a previous owner and was getting hidden under an overgrown shrub. I relocated them and they all see to be happier in their new corner. [s]I'm not sure what they are though - some kind of lily?[/s] They are cannas.

Nope, it's a canna, and you could grow them in the UK if you lifted the tubers every fall like we have to do here in zone 5.

I may be wrong since I've never grown them, but I think it's a canna.

I've never grown yellow ones (which is very pretty and I'd say an improvement over red), but I second the thought that they are cannas. Which aren't lilies exactly, but some people call them that. They love heat and will spread like crazy. It's usually good to put them along a fence or wall where they can get some support, much like you would plant gladiolas.

Good to know! I've tagged the post with lily since there's no canna tag. Depending on how they grow this year I may move them a bit closer back to the fence. I know last year they got super tall but I thought it might be because they had to grow up through a shrub. I didn't even realize they were there till they were almost four feet high. :-P

I love the tall cannas! If they're happy where they are the colony will grow with astonishing speed.

It looks like a pretty canna to me. They like lots of water, so don't let it dry out.

Congrats on such a lovely plant. But please abide by the community rules and place the second image behind an lj-cut. Only one image is allowed outside of a cut. Information on how to do this is linked in on the community profile page if you are unsure.
