Am I too late?

Last year I bought two cloves of elephant garlic.  We enjoyed one very delicious head of home-grown garlic over the summer and I saved the second for planting.  Unfortunatly I sortof forgot about it until I ran across it in the pantry the other day.

Am I too late to plant it?  Last year I put them out in November and harvested in June.

I'm in zone 7 ( Read more... )

vegetable: garlic, zone: usda 7

you could plant it in the early spring (not sure if your ground is frozen) the heads will just be smaller when you harvest

I freely confess I'm a garden heathen. I tend to plant things when I have the time or I get my hands on them--regardless of when the pro's and books claim you should.
I just bought an obscene number of daffodil bulbs which I now have to plant--soonest--sometime in January. I don't think I've ever planted a daffodil bulb during the fall yet.
I say go ahead and plant a huge bunch of garlic if your soil isn't frozen. You should probably water it after planting if the soil temp is steadily above freezing.
Right now the garlic won't do much but grow a few roots but that will let it send up leaves as soon as it warms up a bit.
Good luck!
;)
