My Morning Glories

Sep 15, 2010 06:55

I'm new to the gardening scene so it really surprised me when I attempted to grow some flowers it actually worked! I successfully grew my morning glories from little seeds to the crazy vine plant it is today lol. I think of it as my baby. At first the flowers were a deep purple now there a soft pink and they only sprout early in the morning before ( Read more... )

congrats! i remember the feeling of shock when something i planted actually grew. it's even crazier when you can EAT the thing you grew. now your addiction has begun ;)

also, if you put that cinder block next to wire fence or a wall, the morning glories will start to climb up it! i have this in my garden currently as well.

Thanks! I'm trying to make the jump and grow some fruit but I have to have some essentials first lol I know they just grew and grew till the point and I had to put a big pole behind them to let them climb that and they tend to wrap around any weeds that grow nearby too hahaha

How lovely! My mom grows morning glories every year. She usually goes for the classic blue. Next spring, watch for sprouts in that same area as they have been known to reseed themselves. I agree with roberlyn about something for it to climb. Morning glory tendrils can get wonderfully long if they're given something to latch onto. A few years ago my mom's reached nearly 20 feet!

Congrats on your first success! Let's hope it's the first of many. :D

Thanks! That's why I added a pole in the back of them because the gate it was attached too was too short. I did manage to grow one single sunflower stalk but someone was weed eating and cut it down :( So I hope I can grow one again!

Sunflowers are notoriously easy - provided nobody gets over-enthusiastic with the weed eater, that is. :D If you plant the really big ones ("Mammoth" is the variety I've planted in the past), you can feed the birds and squirrels with the seeds in the winter. Lots of sunshine, just a bit of water, and there you go!

It was really easy that's what surprised me but unfortunately I have family who get over-enthusiastic AKA: crazy with a weed eater but I plan to plant one again. It's all sunshine down here it's about 97 degrees right about now

Congratulations! They are lovely!
Maybe you would like to wait for the seeds, collect them and reseed the plant next year, too? It is pretty easy, I am recycling it like this for some years myself.

Yeah, this plant's been here a while no matter how hot it is which it does get extremely hot now-a-days in Florida so I'm surprised it lasted so long.

Isn't it a great feeling when you plant something and IT ACTUALLY GROWS!! I've gardened for years and I STILL get excited when I see what I planted poking up through the soil and then actually flourishing.

It is very exciting since I never really grew anything before. They just started growing one day and haven't stopped since. This thing is still trying to climb and wrap around stuff.

congrats!

although, nothing scares me more than morning glory :) think twice before you decide to plant it outside - it can take over your entire property, seriously :)

I know this thing has grown really fast and wild and it's only going up, up, up!
