Blueberrries!

This year has been a bunk year for my garden. I bought some topsoil for my raised beds and unfortunately it was very sandy and low in organic content. And it had glass in it. I was totally ripped off but now I'm stuck with it. But I'm going on with it, and plan to plant some blueberries in 4 4 X 4 beds (one bush per bed - I considered two but I ( Read more... )

coffee grounds in your compost. then add it to the area around your blueberries.

And one can get lots of coffee grounds from Starbucks for free! We used it for our blueberries this year. Yum!

tea bags, even [and especially herb tea bags] really are good for compost too.

in Connecticut there is a small charge for soil testing

but if you bring a sample to an ag fair, it can be done on the spot for free

I'd get alot of compost first to amend the area, then use whatever you choose to acidify, then use a sheet mulch on top of the soil after you plant.

Can I ask how you got the free soil test? My mom has a problem area in her backyard where nothing seems to grow, and that might help her. She's in Nassau County, New York, though.

I'd call these folks and see what they know. It also looked like they have a service where they come out to your house and proffer advice.

Okay, cool, thanks. It doesn't appear to be free with them, though...

I don't think she really cares enough about it (it's a very small patch of land, everything else is lush) to pay someone to do a test.
