Sort of off topic

I have a landscaping question, I looked for a group but it doesn't seem like any of them have been active for at least a year, so I'm going to ask you guys.

We recently pulled out the above-ground pool that came with our house.  We are left with a 24 foot circular depression between 12 and 8 inches deep with lovely areas of sandy, weedy ground ( Read more... )

weather: heavy rain, landscaping, zone: usda 7

You could think about a rain garden or a cistern.

My sympathies on the flooding. I know how that is, living in South TX and dealing with floods every time we have a hurricane. As for the grading, I'd get more than one opinion. You never know what fly-by-night companies got started after the flood there, hoping to capitalize, and actually knowing nothing about it. Might make things worse if you get a bad one.

I'm afraid the grading won't work unless we take down the privacy fence and get the neighbors in on it. There's a big low-spot that spans the property lines.

I'm 99% sure that a french drain, emptying in the ditch, is the best (and hopefully cheapest) bet to deal with the existing topography.

Oh, and a rain garden wouldn't really work as that particular area is the only way to get from the backdoor to the shed/yard. Which sucks when it's 3 inches deep in muddy water. *sigh* :-/

Yea, that would be a problem. French drain should work, then...

oh no, I'm so sorry, you will need a drain system maybe a ditch that goes to the one out front? you could even do a french drain, it's underground. you could fill your garden spot with hay and leaves and top soil [altho' I hate the stuff- it burns my skin] and by next year you'll have a lovely lasagna effect. And a great garden spot. The water helped to rot whatever vegetation was in your ground there so it'll be essentially weed free and mostly bug free.

I'm sorry, I didn't see the other replies when I suggested a French drain, so I guess it's unanimous,

I don't know what the flood cycle is. I know that up in Nashville (i'm about 60 miles south of there) it was MUCH worse than what we had. I've only lived down here for about 3 years so as far as "normal weather" is concerned I'm a total newbie but I know that everyone was saying that the last time it was this bad was in 1934, and actually up in Nashville the river peaked higher than it had ever been recorded before ( ... )
