El Niño does some strange things up here (near Seattle). When we have an El Niño winter, we're warmer and dryer than normal, and then we have a cold, wet spring. Just the opposite of most of the rest of the country.
Where are you? And does this comm have a map that shows where its members live? We ought to!
It's coming up on 6:00 pm here in southern Oklahoma and the current temp is 97. We got about an inch of rain a little over a week ago. If you'll send some of that rain this way, I'll send some of my sunshine your way. Lord knows we've got plenty to spare and could definitely use the rain.
RE: so-called-annual dianthus
I'm convinced they stick that "annual" tag on them because they can't technically called some of them "perennial". I've had several like the one in your photo that lasted anywhere from 3-5 years. I think they're some sort of hybrid.
We've been unusually hot here, with not quite enough rain would gladly trade! Your gardens look so lush and inviting - that front walk is simply amazing.
You must be in Oregon (or Washington). The only blessing I've had out of the weather is that I don't have to water the grass (resodding). The roses are ruined, although they still smell great. Summer will be here soon....maybe by October!
We've had a really odd spring in Illinois too. LOTS of rain and heat; the corn is HUGE already and my garden is going nuts. A pleasant change from last year when we had two 90 degree days and they were in early June :P You have gorgeous plants though!

Lol, I'm having a different problem. It's been getting up to 110 here already and a lot of my plants are frying.

So...ungodly hot up to 125 ( in the sun ) and no rain to speak of. Very hard for gardening.

I didn't think people actually gardened in Las Vegas.

And, yeah, I agree with you about the dianthus. Maybe it would keel over in Zone 4 or something, but here in Zone 8 it's definitely a perennial.
