Tag wonkies and a query for the community populace (a mod post)

Mar 24, 2010 22:41

For some reason, a number of tags have not been showing up as existing to some of you lovely users, so I went ahead and tagged the tag info entry with all currently available tags the community has to-date. I will add tags to that entry as they are created. This should help you guys out when it comes to tagging entries. It seems that LJ assigns ( Read more... )

I think public posts should be encouraged, but not enforced. Most people probably just don't think to turn off their friends only post status, and wouldn't mind being reminded to post publicly while here. However I would be concerned that a) enforcing a mildly trivial rule like this would be seen as a bit severe, and b) people may have good reasons for putting the odd post as friends only.

Just my two cents! :)

Heya there! I've voted No and I want to let you know why. I understand and would encourage public posting. On the other hand, we post information here that shows where we live, pictures of our gardens or houses, and personally, I like to make that available to a community who's interested in the garden, but not to search engines interested in my every detail. And certainly not to the average stalker who would like to spy on my home. (I'm exaggerating of course - I do not have that many stalkers, really ;-))

I know there is no real privacy in the net, but the illusion of some would be nice to have.

I agree with this, and is pretty much my thinking as well. I like my privacy (what there is of it on the net), and if I choose to post, I would like the option of keeping it public or community only.

Yup, I agree with this too. Cause I DO have stalkers. :)

It only takes a second for people to join the community to benefit from it!

What the other said. People stumbling across the community are finding a pretty vast amount of info without being a member, it's not like some communities where you don't see a public entry since 2008 and think the comm might be mostly dead. We're active and there's plenty to recommend us to new members I think.

As a new member, I vote no. It's a busy community, with a lot of resources available on a quick glance-through and an extensive tagging system. Joining isn't difficult, so anyone who has more than a passing interest can do so without a long wait to be approved. Most posts probably don't need to be friends-locked, but I think the option is still a good one to have.

I voted other. I think the majority of posts should be public. People doing searches on google and yahoo could benifit from entries posted here. If they do not have an LJ they should not be locked out of a post. The only exception would be if someone made a personal post only for the community like if they post a picture of themselves they don't want everyone else to see. The fact that this is open membership means anyone can join and read the "locked" topics anyway. So really there's no reason to make a locked post with the exceptions I mentioned above. Our experience and knowledge should be for all to share ( ... )
