It's been literally years since I've grown corn, but this spring I've dedicated an 8x10 foot raised bed to another of my wacky mushroom experiments. This time it's shoepeg corn and Stropharia rugoso-annulata, aka, the "Wine Cap" mushroom. This mushroom is often grown with corn in eastern Europe, so I thought I'd give it a try ( Read more... )

You should be able to put in a second crop of corn, but you can verify that here, just put in your zip code.

Hickory King is the best for hominy, and it does well in the South. We use Hickory King, 2-Ear Prolific, and Indian Corn for corn meal.

Corn uses more nitrogen than other crops, but you can still over fertilize. The manure alone may be sufficient. In this area, we side dress corn when we hill it up.

Not really related, but I was wandering through the back yard, checking out the fungus growing on a couple of old stumps I left just for that purpose and I thought of you and your edible fungi posts. Wish I could grow some, but my husband would puke his whole life out.
