Hello!

Mar 27, 2009 12:02

I'm a 2nd year gardener and still learning a LOT. I'm in Zone 5, Nebraska, and I won't be able to plant anything until May (consarn it) when the ground finally thaws completely. I'm looking forward to Spring ( Read more... )

zone: usda 5, flower: dahlia, bulbs, proper care for...

It might help if you repack your dahlia tubers in some damp peat moss (not wet!). Otherwise, keep them cool but above freezing, since you don't want them to come out of dormancy yet.
Hope this helps.

I just hope they didn't dry out so much that they died.

Using a bottle like the ones you use to mist your hair, mist the tubers with water, then pack them in potting soil or peat moss.

Depending on what you want to grow, you can start growing some stuff in the next week or two. I'm going to be planting my peas and some lettuce mixes next week. One of my coworkers put some of her cold loving veggies in this week. Check the grow dates but there are many different types of veggies that grow 4 weeks out from the last frost date. I think ours here in Omaha, NE, is April 24th.

I think cauliflower grows well in cool weather but don't quote me on that. I've never grown it.

I'll be starting my seeds (pole beans, White Acre peas and some flowers) indoors after the first week of April and then I'll put the strongest in the ground in May. Which should give me time to repair all the fences around here. (We have one hell of a rabbit problem.)

Basically I'm just terrified of a late frost so I'm being cautious!

Some veggies don't mind the cold, most can't stand it! I'm building my new raised beds this weekend, and I'll be planting my peas and salad mixes not next weekend (out of town) but the following and those I'm direct sowing. Most of my veggies won't go in until the beginning of may too. I've also got some grape vines heading my way in the mail in May. So excited!

I live in midtown omaha and we have a HUGE rabbit population here too. It's just terrible. Last year they stayed out of the garden though, so I'm hoping they remember to be kind this year too. I take my cats out into the garden with me when I'm out there, and I think that maybe their scent keeps the rabbits at bay.

Foul, evil bunnies. Not only did they wreck my garden but they crawled up onto the deck and chowed down on my Rubeckias and the other potted plants. I'll be complaining about them more than is healthy over the course of the season, believe me.

I agree, plant them in damp soil, but not soaking or else they'll rot.

Will do. Here's hoping they recover!
