Transplanting vegetables

Can you transplant lettuce and carrots? what about green beans? I just put corn gluten meal in my garden and because of that I can't put any seeds directly in it. Would it be possible to start off my carrots in egg cartons, and then transplant them, dirt and all to my garden? Could I do the same for lettuce and beans? I've always been told that carrots don't transfer well and have never done it. I've always direct seeded my green beans, but I know someone who starts hers inside and transfers them. The lettuce would be fine to start indoors, I think.

I don't see why you can't. They sell lettuce seedlings at nursuries. Beans I'm not sure of. Carrots? I don't know either. My carrot growing experience involves 'transplanting' carrot tops from the kitchen to my garden.

Most root crops like carrots don't transplant well, they are so delicate in the root area. But I haven't personally tried doing it. I heard that even if they survive, the roots will be all malformed.

I think that beans would be like peas; you could start them in pots, but they grow so danged fast, I had a hard time getting the taproot out of the starter pot, it had already gone way down into the tray.

No on the carrots. yes on lettuce, beans (though they can be tricky). Basically, root vegetables except onions dont' transplant terribly well.

Whew, I started some onions indoors, so I'm glad you put that caveat in there. I was worried I already messed up. ;)

Lettuce transplants very well. I've never tried carrots.
