"Why bother?  It's lovely this way.  The idea is, sort of, more romantic.  Because it does mean we're together because we want to be.  Not because now we have to be.  It's a slight difference, but maybe it's a very good one."

-Audrey Hepburn on why her and Robert Wolders never actually married

ick. I have to say something just because this hits a passion button of mine:

That quote is very selfish.

How so? I think you're reading it wrong. They were together the entirety of the last 13 years of her life, and even referred to one another and 'husband' and 'wife'. The only thing they never had was a ceremony. The quote is implying how a real marriage isn't about the wedding, but the love you share with that other person. She is saying that they remained together for that long because of how much they loved each other...and not just because it was more convenient than getting a divorce.

I know you probably didn't have that background, but I hope it makes a difference.

They had also both been married before, and both of her sons were completely grown. I can sort of see where you are coming from, but to me there is nothing selfish about that at all.

First off, I want you to know that I love you and don't think of you less for not immediately seeing the selfishness in the attitude behind this quote ( ... )

Christy, I am not going to continue this discussion with you through live journal. What I post on here is for me, and whether or not you agree with it is your own choice.

I love you, and I know your heart is always in the right place. But you are never going to be the sort of representative for Christ that I know you can be unless you learn to love other people the way he did.

Put yourself in someone's place before you judge them. You might be surprised by what you learn.
