National Read A Book Day

Sep 06, 2019 09:43

Apparently today is National Read A Book Day. This begs the question: what book are you / have you /will you be reading today?

I'm reading The Venice Conspiracy by Sam Christer. I'm only up to chapter 9 but there's been two rapes and three murders already :-/ The latter was expected, the former not so much. I'm hoping it gets better.

of books and comic books, getting to know you...

Sounds like we're both reading the same kind of book at the moment!

Today I'm reading Of Ice and Shadows by Audrey Coulthurst. It's the second book in a series I've been following and it's pretty good. I'm about halfway through.

Oh man. That book sounds pretty intense.

I've not heard of that series but it sounds pretty good.

Intense is one way of putting it. The first rape was on the fourth page.

Yeah. The main character initially thought it was a fight with three men beating up another person, so it was described as such. It wasn't until it was over that the main character realised the person being attacked was a young woman...

I hope it's not "Read a Whole Book in One Day" day, because I am for sure out. But otherwise, isn't every day Read a Book Day? I am in the middle of Jude the Obscure (Hardy), Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (Michael Chabon), Vanity Fair (Thackeray), and Americanah (Adichie). They're all great.

That would be a bit much! I think it's more about getting people to rediscover the pleasure of reading, especially in today's fast-paced technology-focused world.

Someone recommended the Kavalier and Clay book to me but I've not got around to reading it yet. It's nice to find someone else who reads more than one book at a time though! Do you switch between them as the mood takes you?

It's more about format for me - Kavalier and Clay is a book-book so I read it in bed; Vanity Fair is on my phone so I can take it anywhere and read it whenever I have a moment; Americanah is on audio so I can listen while I drive or work on other things. I almost always have three books going for that reason, but right now I've also got Jude the Obscure, because the comedian Michael Ian Black decided to make a podcast where he reads it aloud and comments as he goes. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about that format, but I'm riveted. Unfortunately, I'm also all caught up, so I have to wait for new episodes, one week at a time. I think he's almost to the end, thank goodness. The suspense is killing me.

Same here! I tend to have a paper book that I read at home and an ebook on my phone that I read at work, or anywhere that involves waiting or passing time. I don't often listen to audiobooks though, I tried listening to the Wolverine: The Long Night podcast while I was driving and I could not concentrate on both!

Unfortunately the rape ended up being a major thread, being that raped women gave birth to the devil. Not what I was expecting at all.

I hope your books are better!

Surprisingly not! There was a whole thing about priests and sort of reincarnation stuff. Really not at all what I was expecting. I was wanting something more Da Vinci Code-ish, hidden history and that sort of thing *sigh*
