I was busy at work when I got a calendar notification on my phone. I was baffled by that as I didn't have anything scheduled for today and when I checked, the notification didn't make a great deal of sense. I didn't have time to deal with it then so I just dismissed it and carried on working. I checked the Google calendar app when I got home and ( Read more... )

It's annoying on several levels - not just that Google introduced this feature without telling anyone, but that it was set as default and ripe for abuse. I mean, it's a calendar. Who thinks of putting scam events in random people's schedules?!

It's absolutely stupid. When I looked at the event, I couldn't believe anyone would fall for it, it seemed so obviously a scam. It was one of those 'you've won lots of money, click here to claim it!!!' types. But who on earth came up with the idea of trying to scam people through their calendar for crying out loud!

Thank you for the tip! I think I might already have mine turned off, because I got annoyed at it adding a legit invite without my consent. I never thought about spammers taking advantage of it. So sneaky! I'm going to double check my settings.

I thought having my calendar set to private would be enough, I didn't think there would be the option for people to add things to my calendar without my approval! Definitely a good idea to check the settings though.

It's not the technology that's the issue, it could be a useful feature. If you'd booked a flight or train tickets, having those details automatically enter into your calendar could be handy. It's when arsehole types like spammers abuse those features.
