New new Doctor

Oct 10, 2018 16:38

I meant to post about this last night but I ended up with a migraine instead. So a bit belated but here goes.

I watched the new new Doctor Who episode on Monday night and I have Thoughts. I shall put them under this handy cut in case some of you haven't seen it yet.

Spoilers, sweetie )

I don't follow Dr Who at all, even though it has been going on for such a long time. I had high school friends that were fans, and even back then that was not the first doctor! With the new start, would you say this is a good time to dive into the series? Or would I have to start further back to get more background?

Is the "Doctor" supposed to be the same being in different bodies, or is each version a different character?

The reason for this brand new start is to help people like yourself to start watching. You won't need to have any previous knowledge of the programme at all. I think as long as you know that the Doctor is an alien, and goes around helping people throughout time and space, you'll be good to go! :)

Is the "Doctor" supposed to be the same being in different bodies, or is each version a different character?
Umm, yes to both! The Doctor is still the same person, just with a different body. The main character of the Doctor is carried over into each version, although they will have some slightly different personality traits of their own.

I have never gotten into Dr Who. I have watched it occasionally in the past, but don't really see what the fuss is about.

I do like the Daleks, though!

And Tom Baker will always be the Doctor for me - though that's probably showing my age!

And where's Jodie on your icon..?

I think my favourite episodes are the ones set in the past, I like the historical aspect. No Daleks in the new series though, new monsters only, nothing that's been used before!

I didn't make the icon and the person who did doesn't seem to be making them any more! It's a shame but I'll have to see if I can update it somehow.

I liked it, which considering I'm not a big fan of NuWho is a good sign - I decided to just go into it as a blank slate, new concept sort of thing rather than doing any kind of comparisons so I was pleased, I think its going to be a matter of Jodie getting into her character and finding "her" Doctor. Am cautiously hopeful :)

As for Ten's "I've woken too soon" thing, Peter Davison spent his first episode being carted about in a hastily constructed coffin thing so clearly they've gone right back for ideas (yes I know I said I'd not make comparisons and I didn't til you mentioned it, promise :) )

It's all been designed as a blank slate anyway, as a way for people who have never seen any of Doctor Who before to start watching it. I think there's always a period of adjustment for each new Doctor, both for the actor and the audience. It seems like it takes a good series for the actor to really be comfortable in the role - which is a shame for Christopher Eccleston seeing as he only did the one.

Ten's thing had him collapse in front of the companions, get put to bed where he slept and breathed out some of the orange regeneration energy. Then he got woken up suddenly when there was an emergency and then said he'd been woken too soon. That was pretty much copied exactly for Thirteen. It's a bit more than just being asleep and carried about in a box :-/
